Can a Novel ICU Data Display Positively Affect Patient Outcomes and Save Lives?

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of AWARE implementation on critical care processes and patient outcomes in intensive care units at Mayo Clinic Rochester, Minnesota. Ambient’s Clinical Data Analytics software is an EMR interface that includes tools to organize patient data, reduce errors, and provide effectiveness metrics. These tools reduce clinician cognitive overload, resulting in increased productivity and improved decision making. This study compared the outcomes and care processes of ICU patients using a pre-AWARE cohort and a with-AWARE cohort. After adjusting for patient acuity and demographics, AWARE implementation authors found hospital charges decreased by $43,745 (30%) in the post AWARE cohort. In addition, ICU length of stay decreased by 50% and hospital length of stay decreased by 37%. Using Ambient’s clinical data analytics, hospital mortality rate also decreased by a statistically significant 7%. Efficient organization of patient information in the ICU by AWARE is proven to save lives though reducing false positive alerting, length of stay and costs in care.
