Ambient Clinical Analytics Provides a Solution to Improve CMS Sep-1 Compliance Requirements and Save Lives.

Ambient Clinical’s AWARE Sepsis DART™ was designed to improve compliance in the detection and delivery of the sepsis treatment bundle as required by the new SEP-1 CMS quality reporting initiative.

Rochester, MN July 31, 2018 Ambient Clinical Analytics announces today that its AWARE Sepsis DART™ software platform has demonstrated the capability to improve a hospital’s compliance with the CMS Sep-1 quality initiative. CMS began publicly reporting sepsis bundle delivery compliance as part of the Sep-1 Hospital Compare Release on July 25th.

Effective, efficient sepsis recovery requires both detection of the disease and a timely treatment response. Developed and used at Mayo Clinic, Ambient Clinical's Sepsis DART™ (Detection And Response Tool) has demonstrated improvement in sepsis detection and care bundle delivery compliance through:
  • Early detection based on scientific, universally accepted criteria
  • Automated alert mechanism utilizing a hospital’s existing communication system
  • Full CMS process and reporting compliance

The algorithms for Ambient Clinical’s Sepsis DART, a clinical decision support tool specifically designed to effectively detect and manage the treatment of sepsis, were created by working in conjunction with Mayo Clinic clinicians. When it appears sepsis may be present or developing, Sepsis DART programmatically sends defined messages to specified caregivers and monitors treatment progress in the critical first six hours of care, per CMS guidelines.

Published research from Mayo Clinic shows that AWARE Sepsis DART provides high levels of sensitivity and specificity. It also shows improved compliance with delivery of the sepsis treatment bundle within the three to six hour window as required by CMS Sep-1 quality initiative. The tool can easily connect to any Electronic Medical Record system, and was designed to support a hospital’s existing sepsis workflow and the requirements of Lean Six Sigma quality improvement projects.

The impact of Ambient Clinical’s Sepsis DART on patients was featured earlier this year in a video testimonial that tells the journey of Kevin Kronmiller, who was diagnosed with liver disease at the age of 22 and told he had five years to live without a transplant. Kevin beat the odds, but at age 50 a transplant became necessary. Following surgery, Kevin went into septic shock and needed to be resuscitated twice. Having survived both liver disease and a transplant, Kevin was given only a 30% chance of surviving sepsis by his doctors. Guided by Ambient's software, doctors delivered the proper, timely sepsis treatment to save Kevin’s life. Kevin again beat the odds, and six weeks later was living a healthy, normal life.

“We’re honored to be working with many hospitals to show how AWARE Sepsis DART can improve the detection and treatment of sepsis,” said Allen Berning, Chief Executive Officer at Ambient. “In addition to helping support the new CMS Sep-1 reporting initiative, our software saves lives, and the hospitals that embrace our technology can reduce mortality and mitigate patient risk, as demonstrated in Kevin’s story.”

Ambient Clinical Analytics has developed a portfolio of software solutions that change the way critical care providers operate. Using licensed Mayo Clinic technologies, including over 1,000 rules and algorithms, Ambient’s software gives critical care providers real-time access to vital process-of-care information and analytics. AWARE Sepsis DART has received FDA Class II clearance.

“Sepsis DART is not just another detection alert. It is a nonintrusive navigation tool that monitors sepsis care bundle progress toward established sepsis care treatment goals proven to improve sepsis outcomes,” said Vitaly Herasevich, M.D. Ph.D., a founding clinical team member of Ambient Clinical Analytics. Mayo Clinic and Dr. Herasevich have a financial interest in the technology referenced in this news release. Revenue Mayo Clinic receives is used to support its not-for-profit mission in patient care, education and research.
